Summarize Research Literature Honestly

Describe current research honestly, in its terms not yours.

Every topic sits within a theoretical context of previous knowledge, which must be reviewed. To add to knowledge one must first represent its current state. This includes the ideas and results of those that may disagree with your view. A "state of the art" literature review firstly summarizes current research on its own terms, like a reporter trying to report honestly what others are saying. One can report one author's critique of another, but don't take sides early on. Before adding your critical analysis and opinion, first correctly represent the views and results of others. You cannot properly criticize an idea unless you first understand it. Remember, your paper may be reviewed by people who know the works you report, even the very authors themselves.
