Response Scale

Design response scales to be easy to use, unbiased, exhaustive and sensitive

Multi-choice question response scales should be:

  1. Easy to use: It is obvious what the choices mean

  2. Unbiased: The choices do not imply a preferred answer

  3. Exhaustive: The choices cover all possible user answers

  4. Sensitive: The choices produce varied user responses.

Studies suggest that while more options give more information, above about 5-7 options, scale sensitivity and reliability increase little.
